GOLD AGAIN!!!

We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the Gold School Games Mark Award for the 2016/17 academic year and for the third year running.
The School Games Mark is a Government led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

Basketball

On Monday4th December Mr Price took the Basketball ‘A’ team to London Road Sports Centre for a competition. HJS were grouped with Greenfields, St Giles, Mereside and Martin Wilson. The team did really well in their group and managed to play Greenfields in an exciting Semi-Final before losing out to the eventual winners.  

Then on Thursday 7th December Mr Price took the ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams to play at Sundorne Sports Hall. Both teams played very well and enjoyed the afternoon playing basketball.

Year 5 and 6 Cross Country

On Thursday 30th November the Year 5 and 6 cross country team took part in a competition at the Sports Village. The children all did very well on a very cold day. Special mention to Taylor E who finished a magnificent 3rd place in the boys year 6 race and will now represent Shrewsbury in the Shropshire School Games.

Netball

On Thursday 23rd November the girls Netball team played another two fixtures at the Sports Village.  HJS are currently unbeaten in the league after another two victories against Oakmeadow 7-5 and Wilfred Owen 4-2. The league will continue after Christmas where the girls hope to continue their winning streak. All of the girls played brilliantly again so a huge well done to them.

Girls Football – Under 9

The Year 4 girls had their first ever tournament on Wednesday 22nd November at the Sports Village. The girls were grouped with Greenfields, Grange Park and Redhill. They played very well managing to qualify for the next round to be played on 7th February. The girls played Grange Park first and played very well in an even game. But it was Grange Park who scored the vital goal in the last minute of the game to win 1-0. After a break the girls played Redhill, HJS dominated the game and were rewarded with the first goal midway through the second half through Megan, they then doubled their lead when Livvy ran through and scored the second. Next up was Greenfields, again HJS were dominating possession but it was Greenfields who scored the first goal. At 1-0 down the girls fought back well with Livvy running from inside her own half to equalise. It was quickly 2-1 when again Livvy drove through the Greenfields defence to score. HJS were then awarded a penalty so Livvy stepped up to score her hat-trick and make it 3-1 to HJS. It was a fantastic achievement for the girls and we wish them luck for the next round.

Netball

On Thursday 16th November the girls Netball team took part in their first 3 games in the league. They managed to win all 3 games with the scores, 4-3, 6-2 and 9-0. This was a fantastic start to the season.

So a big well done to all the girls, who all played brilliantly and as a team.

Year 3 and 4 Cross Country

On Wednesday 15th November the year 3 and 4 cross country team took part in a competition at Mereside Primary School. The children all did very well and enjoyed the event. Special mention to Ruby C who finished an impressive 7th in the year 4 girls race.

Team results were: Year 3 Girls finished in 6th place, Year 3 boys finished in 10th place, Year 4 boys finished in 8th place and the Year 4 girls finished in a magnificent 3rd place overall. These were great results with up to 15 schools competing in each race.

Tag Rugby

On Monday 6th November, nine children from Year 5 and 6 represented HJS at a school Tag Rugby tournament.The children played three matches in total during an exciting afternoon. Although they found it tough against Greenfields and Trinity Primary School, the children never gave up and kept trying until the final whistle. As a result of their endeavours, HJS managed to gain themselves a fabulous victory over Crowmoor Primary School, winning 6 Points to 3. All the children played with a smile on their face and were a credit to HJS during a very enjoyable afternoon. 

Girls Football – Under 11 Girls ESFA 7 –aside Cup Round 2

On Wednesday 1st November the Year 6 girls team took part in the second round of the ESFA 7 a side competition at the Sports Village. The girls played two games in their group against Wilfred Owen and Grange Park. In the first game, against Wilfred Owen, the girls played very well they created lots of chances and defended very well when needed. They won the game 1-0 thanks to Ellie’s long range effort which flew into the net. Second up were Telford school, Grange Park, who had a strong team. The game started off quite even with both sides having chances but it was Grange Park who took the lead midway through the first half. HJS battled well and again created chances for Ellie and Grace but in the second half Grange Park’s strength won through and they managed a second goal to make it 2-0 to take them through to the final. HJS played very well and should be very proud with how they played and it was a great achievement to come in the top 4.

Sportsability

On Thursday 19th October Miss Edwardes and Mrs Blanchard took 6 children to take part in a Sportsability competition at the Sports Village. The children all had a great time and they were able to try lots of different activities. The children particularly enjoyed the Archery competition.

High 5 Netball

On Monday 16th October the girls Netball team took part in a High 5 tournament at Shrewsbury High School. Two teams played, the older girls got as far as the semi-finals losing by just 1 goal. Both teams played brilliantly considering they have only been to 3 practises and some have never played before.

So a big well done to all the girls that took part.

School Games Level 2 Competitions - Reports & Photos

Boys U11 Kerrison Jones ‘B’ Team Cup

The ‘B’ team were involved in the Kerrison Jones Cup on Wednesday 9th May at the Sports Village. The boys were grouped with St Giles, St Winefrides and Oxon. First up were St Winefrides. HJS played very well and scored very early on through Evan. They continued to dominate with good chances for Ellie and Evan. It was in the second half when Ben scored to make the final score 2-0. In the second game, against a good St Giles side, HJS played very well. They defended well and created a couple of breakaway chances too. The game ended 0-0. The last game was against Oxon, HJS knew they needed a win. They played well in the first half creating lots of chances with Ellie going closest hitting the bar then the post. Second half HJS took the lead a lovely passing move saw Ellie score from close range. The second followed quickly with Evan smashing the ball high into the net. It was then Camron’s turn to get on the scoresheet, again after a good passing move. The game ended 3-0. So, it was time to see if they had made it through to the final. Unfortunately, for HJS they missed out on the final by one goal. They had the same points as St Giles but they won 1-0 and 5-0 so scored one more goal overall.

It was really hard to take for the team who had played so well over the three games.

HJS should be very proud of themselves, how they played and well they represented school.

Boys U10 District Cup

The Year 5 boys team were involved in the District Cup Wednesday 2nd May. The boys were in a large group of 8 teams so played seven games altogether. In the first game against Belvidere the boys played very well and had lots of early chances. Taylor scored in the first half to win 1-0. Next, they came up against Mount Pleasant, who were a good side. HJS played well but it was Mount Pleasant, who scored, to make it 1-0. Next up were Mereside in and even game the boys managed to score through Taylor again to win 1-0. Quickly they were into their next game against Oxon, the game started quite even with Lewis P seeing his fantastic effort hit the crossbar. It was Oxon, who then scored two goals to make it 2-0. In the next game HJS played Shrewsbury Cathedral they played very well, dominating the game to win 3-0 with Taylor(2) and Lewis P getting the goals. It was St Winefredes next the boys getting a 0-0 draw. In the last game the boys played Oakmeadow, it was a tight game. Oakmeadow scored first only for Taylor to equalise but then Oakmeadow quickly scored again to make it 2-1. It was in the dying seconds that Toby stabbed home to make it 2-2.

Unfortunately, the results were not enough to see the boys into the final. They all played very well and did themselves proud.

Orienteering

On Thursday 26th April, Mrs Owen and Mrs Jones took three teams to take part in an Orienteering competition at the Sports Village.

The children were split into pairs and then competed against other schools. The aim of the competition was to read a map and find markers. They then needed to get back to base as soon as they could. The Teams A1 (Kian and Jack), A2 (Archie and Lewis P) and B1 (Katie and Summer) went out first and got very good times. Then Teams B2 (Toby and Lewis J), C1 (Hollie and Lily) and C2 (Emily and Liam) went out. Again, they came back with good times, Toby and Lewis getting the best time of 17 mins 22 seconds. The times were added together by the organiser and HJS did very well overall with the A Team (Kian, Jack, Archie and Lewis P) getting third place!!

The children all did really well and had great fun!!

Girls Football – Under 11 Girls Challenge Cup

On Wednesday 25th April the Year 6 girls team took part in the Challenge Cup at the Sports Village. The girls played three games in their group against St Georges, Mount Pleasant and Belvidere. In the first game, against Belvidere, the girls played very well and scored early on through Ellie. HJS dominated the rest of the game and got a well earned 1-0 win. Second up were St Georges, who were a very good side. HJS tried very hard and never gave up but lost the game to the better team. In the last game they came up against Mount Pleasant, this time HJS were on top creating lots of chances with Grace going close a couple of times in the first half. In the second half the girls played well and again had chances the best when Grace hit the post! But it wasn’t to be as the game ended 0-0. Unfortunately, the girls hadn’t made it to the semi-finals but they had given a lot of effort.

Boys U11 Severn Cup

The Year 6 boys team were involved in the Severn Cup on Wednesday 18th April at the Sports Village. The boys were grouped with St Giles, Belvidere and Mount Pleasant. First up were Belvidere. HJS played very well with some good attacking play, they dominating the possession, but were unable to find a goal. The game finished 0-0. In the second game against Mount Pleasant the boys dominated play again and had good chances but again couldn’t get a goal. The last game was against St Giles, a very good side, the boys played well again and never gave up. They had a good opportunity through Chris on the break but it wasn’t to be with St Giles scoring the all important goals to put them through to the Semi-Final.

The boys all played very well and should be proud of themselves over the whole year!

Girls Football County Shield – Under 10 round 2

The Year 5 girls took part in the second round of the County Shield on Wednesday 7th March at The Sports Village. The girls were grouped with Greenfields and Mereside, playing both teams twice. In the first game against Mereside the girls played well but unfortunately lost 1-0. The next game was against a very good Greenfields team. The girls played very well and managed a clean sheet but were unable to score so the game ended 0-0. It was the same story in the next two games, HJS defended fantastically well in both games but again couldn’t find that all important goal. Although in the game against Mereside, Freya had a great effort saved by the keeper and against Greenfields went on amazing run only for the keeper to save her effort. Overall the girls played really well and should be very proud of finishing in the top 6 schools in the County.

Shropshire School Games Festival

On Tuesday 6th March, Taylor, in Year 5, took part in The Shropshire School Games festival. It included many events over the course of the day including Basketball, Hockey and Tag Rugby. Taylor was representing, current County champions, Shrewsbury in the Cross Country event.  The festival included teams from all over Shropshire including Telford and Wrekin and North Shropshire. Taylor was competing in a race with the best 36 runners in the County, which is a massive achievement and performed very well on a really tough course.

So a huge well done to Taylor!

Overall the Shrewsbury team retained the County trophy to remain champions of Shropshire!!

Tennis

On Thursday 15th February Mrs Blanchard took four Year 5 children to The Shrewsbury Club for a tournament. The children were competing in a friendly competition against other schools. The school had been invited to watch and play tennis during the GB Pro-Series supported by Budgen Motors Mens National Tennis tournament. 

The children really enjoyed the tennis they played and managed to watch a couple of professional tennis matches too!

Hockey

On Thursday 15th February, two Year 6 Hockey teams took part in a School Games Hockey Tournament at Meole Brace Secondary School.

The A team were grouped with Radbrook, Coleham and Shrewsbury High School. After the three games they had lost two and drawn one, which unfortunately wasn’t enough to see them through to the Quarter-Finals. It was the same story for the B team too, they were grouped with Prestfelde, Meole Brace and Greenfields where again they lost two and drew one.

The children all played really well and scored a fair few goals but it just was not to be on this occasion.

Gymnastics

On Wednesday 14th February Mrs Owen took a Year 4 Gymnastic team to Shrewsbury Academy for a competition. The children were competing in a floor competition and a vault competition against other schools. They have been spending time practising the routine for the event and all performed very well. Livvy, Ruby and Emily all got gold in vault and the floor whilst Geno and Lauren both got silver awards for both.

Overall as a school HJS came an impressive 4th place!

Sportsability Sportshall Athletics

Mrs Downes took a Sportsability team to the Sports Village on Friday 2nd February to take part in an Athletics competition. The children all took part in a range of events including running, jumping and throwing. They all did very well and enjoyed the afternoon.

Girls Football – Under 11 Girls County Plate

On Wednesday 24th January the Year 6 girls team took part in the County Plate at the Sports Village. The girls played three games in their group against Windmill, St Winefrides and Belvidere. In the first game, against Windmill, the girls played very well they created lots of chances but just couldn’t find that all important goal. So the game ended 0-0. Second up were St Winefrides, who had one very good player. The game started off quite even with both sides having chances, but it was St Winefrides who took the lead. HJS battled well and again created chances for Ellie and Grace. Then in the second half St Winefrides scored a second to make it 2-0. In the last game they came up against Belvidere, again it was a very even game. HJS created the best chances, with Ellie seeing a couple of shots go wide. Megan made two unbelievable saves before Belvidere managed to score to make the final score 1-0. HJS played well, but just couldn’t get the goals they needed.

Sportshall Athletics

On Monday 15th January 18 children in the Sportshall Athletics team took part in a competition at the Sports Village. The children all did very well and took part in a range of indoor athletics field and track events. Special mention to Jake who finished 3rd in the Chest Push and Sharlena who finished 3rd in the Soft Javelin.

Girls Football County Shield – Under 10

The Year 5 girls had their first tournament on Wednesday 3rd January at the Sports Village. The girls were grouped with Greenfields, Mount Pleasant, Oxon and Longden. They played very well managing to qualify for the next round. The girls played Mount Pleasant first and played very well, with Ceri creating chances for Livvy, they were the better side but were just unable to get that all important goal and it finished 0-0. Next up HJS played Greenfields, who were a strong team, the girls played very well and were unlucky to concede the vital goal in the last minute of the game to lose 1-0. With no break the girls then played Oxon HJS dominated the game but were again unable to score a goal and the game ended 0-0. In the final game against Longden HJS knew they needed to win to get through to the next round. The girls started the game very well and created lots of chances. Ceri went on a great run and hit the underside of the bar only for the referee to have judged the ball had gone out. Livvy then had a couple of chances from Freya’s long throws before Ceri went on another amazing run this time finishing from a tight angle to score her first HJS goal! HJS continued to dominate the game with Holly, in goal, only having one save to make. It wasn’t long before HJS scored their second goal of the game when Freya smashed the ball in from outside the box to make it a final score of 2-0. The girls had made it through to the next round!

School News & Level 1 Competitions

Half Marathon Update

The children who entered the Half Marathon challenge have been working very hard over the last few weeks. Most children have managed 10 miles so far with a few needing to catch up over the next few weeks. They will then complete the last 1.1 miles at the Shrewsbury Half Marathon on 16th June. It has been a very exciting opportunity for the children. Staff have also got involved, with Mrs Owen, Mrs Downes, Mrs Thain and Mr Tombleson all taking part.

Running club has also been a great success, taking place on Tuesday mornings at 8:30am. All children, staff, and parents can take part just turn up on Tuesday mornings!

Level 1 Tennis Competition

On week commencing 19th & 26th March 5 classes took part in a Level one Tennis competition. The children were scored on hitting the ball over the net (King/Queen of the court). They scored 1 point for hitting over the net, 2 points hit but landing out of court, 10 points for landing with court and 25 points if the ball was caught. The points were then added together and averaged out. Giving the House points for each team. It was a fun competition!

Level 1 Dodgeball Competition (Ultimate Dodgeball – British Heart Foundation)

On Monday 19th March, Year 4 took part in a Dodgeball competition. The children all had great fun and enjoyed refreshments provided by the FunRaisers. The year group were split into 8 teams and competed in two groups with the final being played on Friday 23rd. The results were as follows:

Half Marathon

59 children have signed up to compete in a half marathon challenge. The children will complete 1 mile a week for 12 weeks in school and then the last 1.1 miles they will complete at the Shrewsbury Half Marathon on 16th June. It is a very exciting opportunity for the children where, if completed, they will receive a t-shirt and medal on the day. The runners, along with Mrs Owen, Mrs Downes and Mrs Thain ran their first mile on Monday 26th February and will continue to run every Monday lunchtime.

Invasion Games – Level one competition

In week beginning 16th October 8 classes took part in an Invasion Games Level one competition. Class 5 competed in a football tournament, classes 7, 8, 9 and 12 took part in a Target ball (throwing and catching) tournament and classes 1, 2 and 3 took part in a Hockey tournament. The children were split in 4 teams and played games against each other in a round robin. They all competed well and gained house points for their houses. The Year 6 Sports Leaders were also on hand to record results, referee and warm up the teams. The results were as follows:

Level 1 Cross Country Competition

On Tuesday 17th October, the children took part in a level 1 Cross Country at Harlescott Junior School. All children tried really hard with the event and showed a high level of resilience. The points from this event will be added to the house points for 2017-2018. Letters will be going out after half term to invite the children, who came in top positions, to the Level 2 cross country event.
