SHREWSBURY’S FIRST GOLD SCHOOL

Harlescott Junior School is delighted to have become the first in the town to be awarded with gold standard in the Sainsbury’s School Games Mark. We have been recognised for the standard of our sports and P.E curriculum and clubs at the school. Our school reached gold standard across a number of criteria including the number of after school clubs available to pupils, intra house competitions and providing children opportunity to lead games and sports for other children. We took part in sports competitions in over nine different sports including cricket, basketball, cycling, as well as becoming the 2014/2015 junior netball league champions and Shropshire Severn Cup football team winners.

The Sainsbury's School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Miss Rebecca Jones, PE coordinator at our school said of the achievement, “We are extremely happy and grateful to Denise Lee, our School Games Organiser for her support, to become the first school in Shrewsbury to be awarded gold status. The school offers children many opportunities to enjoy sports and games, and we strive to have opportunities for everyone at the school to become active and healthy citizens.”

Change 4 Life

The children have really enjoyed the Change 4 Life club and have now got some summer homework to complete. They have an activity pack, where they get stickers each time they do something active. Here are some quotes from the children who attended the club:

"I really enjoyed the club. Last week we got to try some healthy foods. My favourite foods were the strawberries and hummus. The club was a good opportunity to get some exercise within school. Over the summer holidays, I want to do lots of different activities to get some exercise"  R  Evans Year 6.

" I was one of the sports leaders, who helped out at the club. It was great to get to know younger children in the school and help them become more positive towards exercise.  I also enjoyed leading the games and activities which I learnt at the Leadership Academy with Mrs Kitcher, " C McKee Year 6 Leader.

Some Year 5 pupils have been chosen to train as Sports Leaders. The children will be trained by ActivSports Mr Roberts and will lead the Level 1 Cricket competition at the end of the half term. Well Done and Good Luck!

Level 2 School Games

News

Kwik-Cricket

Friday 17th June

Nine children from Year 3 and 4 represented HJS at the Kwik-Cricket Tournament, played at Shrewsbury Sports Village.

The children had a wonderful time displaying some useful Cricket skills. From the very first game, children were very determined to perform to their very best, illustrating some excellent approaches towards teamwork.

Many of the children excelled while they were fielding showing high levels of resilience to help them to be successful. Christopher, Taylor, Ben and Imogen took some amazing catches and made some great stops during the afternoon.

Riley played very well as wicket keeper, using the knowledge that he has learnt to help him, throughout the afternoon.

It was pleasing to see the children batting with confidence and authority. All of them did exceptionally well. Ellie, Fletcher, Daniel and Jacob managed to hit the ball great distances resulting in them achieving 4’s and 6’s.

We played six matches in total, winning five. A magnificent achievement. At the end of the competition, HJS were level on points with two other teams at the top of the group. As a consequence, it was decided that the team which had scored the most runs during the afternoon would be deemed as the winners. This meant that HJS finished second overall.

Well done to all the children that took part, playing Cricket in the spirit of the game with great determination and effort.

Dodgeball Competition

On Thursday 16th June Mrs Thain took the Dodgeball team to the Sports Village for the Shrewsbury KS2 School Games Day. The team had a great afternoon playing Dodgeball and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

In the second round HJS fared even better playing Greenfields and winning 5 ½-4 ½ and beating Oakmeadow 7-3 and a very tight loss to Pontesbury 5-4 ½ . The whole team had a fantastic day out and did themselves proud making it a top 10 finish for HJS. There were some great performances with excellent hitting and super catches.

With a special mention to Gary, who was a super Captain and managed to score a fair few rounders too.

The under 10 girl’s football team were involved in a tournament at the Sports Village on Wednesday 18th November 2015. The girls played really well in all three games and sailed through to the next round to be played on 9th December. They played Grange Park and won 1-0 thanks to a Kaitlin goal, they then went on to win against St Peters of Wem 3-0 with Kaitlin scoring again and Ellie scoring 2 fabulous goals. In the last game they played Prees, who had a very good goalkeeper, again it was 1-0 to HJS and yet again the scorer was Kaitlin. Boys U11 County Plate Round 3

HJS were involved in the 3rd round of the County plate competition on Wednesday 9th March. The boys played two matches, the first against St Georges was always going to be tough, but the boys battled through. They played well first half and were able to go in 0-0. The first real chance of the game fell to HJS early in the second half after a good run from Emilio but unfortunately they were unable to take it. St Georges then played some neat football to go 1-0 up. HJS pushed for the equaliser but it wasn’t to be and St Georges scored two more well worked goals. Next up were St Giles and with the boys raring to go there was only going to be one winner. After dominating large parts of the game HJS were rewarded with a goal from Will to seal the 1-0 win. It was then down to penalties to go through to the Semi Finals. After the first 3 penalties it was all square and down to sudden death. Unfortunately the luck was against the boys and the Baschurch keeper made a fine save to deny the boys a place in the Semi Final. It was a heart-breaking end to the competition but the boys should be proud of getting this far.

Special mention to both, Emilio and Sam Brown, who had both been poorly but gave everything for the team.

Well done boys!

Team: Sam B, Emilio WJ, Alex G, Jack P ©, Lewis H, Luke D, William R, Steven P, Ricky J

Boys Under 10 Tournament

The Year 5 boys were involved in a competition at the Sports Village on Wednesday 2nd December. They played very well during the tournament and were unfortunate to not go through to the next round. They first played Greenfields, who were a very good team, HJS dominated possession and had the best chances but a late breakaway Greenfields goal meant they lost 1-0. In the next game against Newtown the boys again played very well and scored early on when Jay cut inside and fired home. Newtown then got a goal back on the break before Callum scored the winner from a well worked short corner. In the last game verses Wilfred Owen the boys knew they had to win to go through to the next round. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be as Wilfred Owen scored a late winner even though HJS had played well creating lots of chances and enjoying good possession. It was a heart-breaking end to the competition.

A special mention goes to Jamie H, Josh M and Harry for their excellent attitude during the evening. Also Sam H who made some important saves.

Team: Sam H, Josh M, Harry, Luis, Mathew, Jamie H, Callum B, Jay, Jamie W.

It was the turn of the Girls U10 team on Saturday playing for the Girls County Shield but unfortunately they also lost to another excellent St Georges team.

A massive well done to all of those players who played, it was a real achievement to make it to the finals of these competitions and they should all be very proud of their efforts.

Girls U11 Challenge Cup

The HJS girls were involved in the Challenge cup competition on Wednesday 13th April at the Sports Village. The girls played 3 games in their group, first up were Rad brook, the girls played very well and scored early on through Kaitlin and it was Kaitlin who got the second too as HJS won 2-0. The second game was against St Giles, the girls did brilliantly and won 2-0 again with Kaitlin scoring two more. Next was Oakmeadow the girls again dominated but only managed the one goal with the Oakmeadow keeper making some good saves and Kiera hitting the post. So by winning the group HJS had made it to the Semi-Final. Their opponents were Meole Brace, the game started off quite tight but as it went on the girls found their rhythm and went 1-0 up thanks to another Kaitlin goal. In a very tense game HJS needed a second and it was Melissa who provided it with a great volley. HJS were eventual winners and were through to the final! The final will be played at the Greenhous Meadow on Friday 6th May at 4pm against St Georges.

Well done to all the girls who played, they all really deserved to go through to the final.

Team: Millie-Anne, Bethan©, Lacey, Ellie, Kiera, Kaitlin, Melissa, Louise, Yasmin

Shropshire Schools and Colleges FA National Youth Futsal 5 aside Tournament

The Under 10 girls took part in a Futsal Competition at the Sports Village on Monday 21st March. HJS were in a group with 4 other schools and won their group comfortably winning all their games. They played Prees first and won 4-0, then Condover and won 5-0, they beat Redhill 2-1 in a close match and finally won 5-0 against a very young Oakmeadow team. They were drawn to play Pontesbury in the Semi-Final and produced their finest display of the tournament, they were 7-0 winners and some of the football played was magnificent. So on to the final, with the other Semi-Final going to penalties it was a tense wait to see who they would play. Prees eventually beat Newport in sudden death, which meant HJS would face them again in the final. The final started slowly with both teams having chances before Ellie scored to make it 1-0 it was 2-0 soon after and even though Prees got one back to make it 2-1, HJS never looked back and scored two more goals to make the final score 4-1. HJS had won the cup!

The girls will now go on to represent Shropshire in the Futsal Regional Championships in May.

Well done girls!!

Team: Grace Taylor, Lucy Simmonds, Kiera Brookes ©, Kaitlin Brookes, Ellie Burns, Chloe Nicholas.

HJS in the Final!!!

U10 Girls County Shield

The under 10 girls were involved in the County Shield semi-finals on Wednesday 9th March. The girls played 5 matches knowing the top two would reach the final to be played at The Greenhous Meadow. In the first game they played St Peters of Wem , the girls played well and dominated large parts if the game. Ellie and Kaitlin both had chances before Megan won the game with a screamer of a shot into the top corner, her first ever goal! HJS went into the next game with confidence against a good St Georges side and went 1-0 up early on thanks to a Kaitlin goal. However, St Georges increased the pressure on the HJS and managed to score two goals which meant the team lost 2-1. In the next game against Greenfields the girls were flying and showed just how good they can be. They scored early after Kaitlin forced the GK into a mistake and then dominated with Ellie scoring 2 goals with outstanding finishes. Finally, it was Kiera’s turn to get on the scoresheet, scoring from the penalty spot after the Greenfields defender had handled in the box. Prees were the girl’s next opponents. HJS again created lots of chances for Ellie and Kaitlin and it was Kaitlin who won the game with a fine run and finish after her sister, Kiera, had put her through on goal. The final game was probably the most difficult, not knowing how the other teams had got on HJS did everything they could to win the game. Redhill had a couple of good players and were dangerous at times and it was them that scored first. HJS knew they had to score and after lots of pressure Kaitlin scored to make it 1-1. The girls then defended superbly and the game ended as a draw.

HJS had done enough to get themselves into the final! It was well deserved with some excellent performances throughout the whole competition.

Everyone can now look forward to the final which will be played on Saturday 7th May at The Greenhous Meadow.

Well done girls!!!

Team: Grace T, Lucy S, Carys B, Ellie B, Kiera B, Megan I, Kaitlin B, Yasmin SP and Jess TW.

Girls U11 County Plate - Semi Finals

The girls U11 team were involved in the Semi Final of the County Plate competition on Wednesday 2nd March. The girls played five matches overall in horrendous playing conditions again! St Peters of Wem, were their first opponents, a game which the girls dominated but unfortunately couldn’t score so it ended 0-0. In the second game they played a good Greenfields team and won 1-0 thanks to Melissa’s goal, HJS had other chances too with Kaitlin and Melissa again going close. Next up was St Lawrence, again HJS created all the chances with the St Lawrence keeper making some fine saves. However, luck was not on the girls side, with St Lawrence breaking away to make it 1-0 with their only attack of the game. With two games to go HJS knew they had to win both to stand a chance of making the final. It wasn’t to be, after coming up against a very good St Georges side in the fourth game and losing, they faced Newport, who were outstanding and will be worthy winners of the competition. The girls were devastated but they should all be proud of their performances and achievements throughout the competition, they reached the last 6 in the County!

Well done girls you’ve been magnificent!

Team: Millie-Anne B, Lacey S, Bethan H ©, Kiera B, Ellie B, Melissa C, Kaitlin B, Yasmin H

The girls all played very well and managed to get through to the Semi-Final which will be held in March. Oxon were their first opponents, a game in which the girls dominated, HJS won the game thanks to an own goal. Many chances were created but the Oxon goalkeeper played very well and kept the score down to 1-0. In the second game they played a good Greenfields team and unfortunately lost 1-0 in a very tight game, they created good chances with the Greenfields keeper needing to make a number of saves. They went in to the final game against Oakmeadow knowing a win or draw would see them through to the Semi-Finals, they started off well, again creating lots of chances, with Melissa managing to finish to make it 1-0. Oakmeadow then scored a breakaway goal making it 1-1. HJS continued to make chances with Melissa, Kiera and Ellie all going close. Ellie then scored the winner with a great run and shot. So this meant HJS could celebrate, having made it to the Semi-Finals!

It was a fantastic performance by the whole team during the tournament in terrible conditions! Well done girls on to the next round in January.
